Welcome to the Cyborg Institute Wiki!
This wiki represents the bulk of the work of the Cyborg Institute. It contains research, notes of our contributors, notes concerning our projects, and other important information. Feel free to jump in right away, or be in contact with anyone who contributes to the wiki.
Current Work
I will attempt to keep this page current with news regarding interesting developments in this text, areas of common interest and focus, and a brief finding aid for using this text.
For a discussion of possible enhancements and topics of interest, the ContentIncubator might be a good place to begin thinking about the high-level overview of what needs to be covered. Current Projects include:
Sygn - A user generated database and social networking infrastructure.
TumbleManager - A publishing system built around static generation, powerful editorial tools, and publication workflow automation.
CriticalFutures - A collaborative adventure in "wiki fiction."
Additional background of SoftwareFreedom, Cyberculture, and the practices that drive the use of technology.
Contributor blogs where our community collects information and store notes regarding ongoing projects.
Intentions
Background
This text is as a platform to explore cyborg issues, strategies, and development at the confluence of individuality, technology, and culture. While we started the wiki to organize and collect the work of the Cyborg Institute, we intend that it should grow and develop beyond the boundaries of our little team, and address the needs and interests of a larger community.
The wiki is a community owned Free work, and everyone can contribute, download, and make derivative works of this wiki. We hope you do, and we look forward working with you.
To be clear, this wiki is not an encyclopedia. The first person is welcomed and encouraged. You should feel free to attribute your work, editorial or original, and while we enjoy it if you do, this isn't a requirement in any way.
Inspirations
When I said "there should be a wiki for the Cyborg Institute," I thought immediately of sites like the EmacsWiki and the original wiki at C2 rather than perhaps more popular wikis in the vein of Wikipedia. Look to the former for inspiration, and for an idea of what I'm going for.
Style
Community
Do contribute. I encourage you to create a user page in our people (users) folder. Link to it elsewhere, write about yourself, use it as a blog. I've written a lot of the content here, but that's cause I'm a wordy sort, don't let that stop you. All contributions are welcome.
Modes
In general: Do add pages to the wiki. Even stubs of needed topics are useful, Do edit existing pages. And of course, do enjoy! We'll figure out the rest later.
There are many different kinds of pages, tones, and approaches to writing content for this wiki that are all acceptable. You might write or ?respond to an essay, or you might provide a collection of links to resources on a given topic, or you might publish some sort of data/code/text in a page. Make use of the discussion pages available for back-channel conversation about content, if you like.
Or any combination of the above. All discussion of cyborg-related topics are acceptable and encouraged.
A few technical notes if you're enclined: this wiki is powered by awesome wiki engine ikiwiki, and the source files are edited in the markdown syntax. There's a ?SandBox if you want to play with it. Because ikiwiki rocks, the source is accessible both via a web and a ?git interface. This wiki is licenced under the terms of the GNU GPL version 3 and other similar terms as described in our LICENSE file. You may read more about that decision/policy on the page about ?licensing. We welcome and encourage contribution.
